Narrative:

I accepted a handoff on air carrier X. Over the landline I heard air carrier X is looking for 10000'. On initial contact I descended air carrier X to 10000'. I thought boston approach handed off air carrier X to me and that they owned airspace surface to 14000'. A flight progress strips showed 10000' on the strip. A period of time expired and boston approach called and asked if the center gave air carrier X to me. Now I knew boston approach did not handoff air carrier X to me. The operational deviation was discovered while reviewing the tape due to another aircraft accident. The incident occurred because of a lack of knowledge of boston approach airspace and not taking the extra actions to ensure descent was approved.
