Narrative:

Air carrier X initial call up to ZJX, had to call 3 times. On third call, I asked for a radio check and was told that we were loud and clear standby. I didn't call ATC for 20 mins or so which may have been about 80-100 mi until we were at a point where we should be talking to raleigh approach or washington center and we would definitely be lower than 19000. After calling center (jax) several times without response, I called raleigh approach and was given a frequency for washington center. All proceeded normally from that point. I should have been more persistent on initial call and being idented since I don't think we were idented.

Narrative: ACR X INITIAL CALL UP TO ZJX, HAD TO CALL 3 TIMES. ON THIRD CALL, I ASKED FOR A RADIO CHK AND WAS TOLD THAT WE WERE LOUD AND CLR STANDBY. I DIDN'T CALL ATC FOR 20 MINS OR SO WHICH MAY HAVE BEEN ABOUT 80-100 MI UNTIL WE WERE AT A POINT WHERE WE SHOULD BE TALKING TO RALEIGH APCH OR WASHINGTON CTR AND WE WOULD DEFINITELY BE LOWER THAN 19000. AFTER CALLING CTR (JAX) SEVERAL TIMES WITHOUT RESPONSE, I CALLED RALEIGH APCH AND WAS GIVEN A FREQ FOR WASHINGTON CTR. ALL PROCEEDED NORMALLY FROM THAT POINT. I SHOULD HAVE BEEN MORE PERSISTENT ON INITIAL CALL AND BEING IDENTED SINCE I DON'T THINK WE WERE IDENTED.
