Narrative:

Our flight plan called for J34 hln. However, upon crossing bil, the first officer, who was flying the aircraft, inadvertently set the course for J16, a difference of 16 degrees. This was the route we had flown on a previous trip. I set J34 on my VOR, noticed the first officer had set his, but failed to detect that he had set the wrong course. ATC called us about 35 mi past billings and asked what our clearance was. I responded and he gave us a heading for hln. There did not appear to be a conflict with any other aircraft. A contributing factor was that my seat was back, causing my yoke to block my view of the HSI. We both stated that we normally xchk the opposite VOR, but failed to do so in this case. This calls for renewed diligence. Reliance on the omega, which we were not using, also contributed.
