Narrative:

While being vectored, in VFR conditions, to runway 9L at fll, we were in a turn to final at 2000' MSL. Approach control called out, 'unknown VFR traffic at 12 O'clock, 1 mi.' we immediately saw the aircraft at our altitude, on a collision course. First officer was flying and executed a pull-up maneuver to 2500'. Meanwhile the traffic (an small aircraft) was observed to dive in a right-hand turn. As we climbed I advised approach control that we were climbing to miss an small aircraft, and that the small aircraft was diving. A normal visibility approach was made to runway 9L after clear of traffic. I questioned fll ground control as to the existence of an arsa at fll, and as to their knowledge of our near miss with an small aircraft while being worked by approach control. They told me that they had, '1900' traffic that was being tracked.' this was the first indication that I had that ATC knew the altitude of this 'unknown' traffic. Many of our passenger saw the small aircraft go by and commented as they deplaned. I feel we were vectored into VFR traffic that was squawking altitude, but for whatever reason was overlooked by the controller. An evasive maneuver avoided a collision. Incidentally, our medium large transport was not equipped with TCA. We were close enough to identify both the model and color of the conflict aircraft.

Title: EVASIVE ACTION TAKEN FROM SMA TRAFFIC CALLED AS ACR TURNING FINAL.

Narrative: WHILE BEING VECTORED, IN VFR CONDITIONS, TO RWY 9L AT FLL, WE WERE IN A TURN TO FINAL AT 2000' MSL. APCH CTL CALLED OUT, 'UNKNOWN VFR TFC AT 12 O'CLOCK, 1 MI.' WE IMMEDIATELY SAW THE ACFT AT OUR ALT, ON A COLLISION COURSE. F/O WAS FLYING AND EXECUTED A PULL-UP MANEUVER TO 2500'. MEANWHILE THE TFC (AN SMA) WAS OBSERVED TO DIVE IN A RIGHT-HAND TURN. AS WE CLBED I ADVISED APCH CTL THAT WE WERE CLBING TO MISS AN SMA, AND THAT THE SMA WAS DIVING. A NORMAL VIS APCH WAS MADE TO RWY 9L AFTER CLR OF TFC. I QUESTIONED FLL GND CTL AS TO THE EXISTENCE OF AN ARSA AT FLL, AND AS TO THEIR KNOWLEDGE OF OUR NEAR MISS WITH AN SMA WHILE BEING WORKED BY APCH CTL. THEY TOLD ME THAT THEY HAD, '1900' TFC THAT WAS BEING TRACKED.' THIS WAS THE FIRST INDICATION THAT I HAD THAT ATC KNEW THE ALT OF THIS 'UNKNOWN' TFC. MANY OF OUR PAX SAW THE SMA GO BY AND COMMENTED AS THEY DEPLANED. I FEEL WE WERE VECTORED INTO VFR TFC THAT WAS SQUAWKING ALT, BUT FOR WHATEVER REASON WAS OVERLOOKED BY THE CTLR. AN EVASIVE MANEUVER AVOIDED A COLLISION. INCIDENTALLY, OUR MLG WAS NOT EQUIPPED WITH TCA. WE WERE CLOSE ENOUGH TO IDENT BOTH THE MODEL AND COLOR OF THE CONFLICT ACFT.
