Narrative:

At FL370 just after leveloff; the autothrottles disconnected. We noticed the left engine spooling down and had no throttle response. Went to flight on the ignition. Still no response from the engine. We descended to FL290 and tried a restart. During restart attempt; we got airframe vibration and rapidly rising egt. We disconnected the restart. Then we accomplished the engine fire/severe damage/separation checklist. We declared an emergency and diverted to ZZZ. We notified company; flight attendants and passenger. We made a smooth touchdown at ZZZ weighing 200000 pounds. The entire crew performed their duties in a professional manner.
