Narrative:

I had not been to this airport for over 16 yrs but was aware of construction at the airport through a NOTAM check the morning of the flight and arrival earlier that morning. I was taxiing out for IFR departure. Gck ground cleared me to runway 35 via taxiway C; hold short runway 35. I read back taxi instructions and proceeded to taxi. I did not realize construction on airport apron blocked taxiway a; the taxiway that parallels runway 35/17 and while mistakenly expecting to cross it before getting to runway 35; inadvertently crossed the hold short line for runway 35. I immediately stopped the airplane when I realized I had just crossed the hold short line. Ground cleared me to back-taxi runway 35; right turn on runway 30 with a 180 degree turn upon crossing the hold short line for runway 35; and then hold short runway 35. I again read back the taxi clearance and proceeded to taxi. Was asked to switch to tower frequency while taxiing (same controller working both position). Made a right turn onto runway 30 but the hold line painted on runway 30 was nearly invisible and tower informed me I had passed the hold short line and could now make my 180 degree turn; which I did and proceeded to taxi back toward runway 35. Tower said 'stop! Stop!' which I immediately did. Tower said I had crossed the hold short line for runway 35. I apologized and informed them that their hold short line painted for runway 35 on runway 30 was nearly invisible. Tower agreed but said there was a hold short sign to my left alongside the runway. I looked; but the only sign I could see was a black ground-based sign approximately 30 inches high by 4 ft wide with no words or markings. Being unfamiliar with the airport and with construction going on; I should have asked for progressive taxi. I had the airport diagram out on my approach plate for ILS runway 35 but did not realize taxiway a was extended from the south end of the apron. I was expecting to cross a taxiway before getting to runway 35 and in my mind was looking ahead to the runway as taxiway a. As far as the hold short line for runway 35 painted on runway 30; there was no paint left and the only observable marking on the runway was like a shadow of the marking. As far as the signage tower reported; again the only visible sign I saw; even after I stopped; was the black sign mentioned earlier. This intersection needs to be more clearly marked. At no time did my airplane interfere with runway 35 as I immediately stopped when I realized my first mistake and again when told to stop by the tower. An air liner landed on runway 35 while I was stopped on runway 30 and my aircraft not near enough to be a hazard for their landing. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: reporter stated that the taxiway was under construction and the tower requested he taxi down the runway and exit onto another runway; do a 180 degree turn and hold short of the departure runway. He stated that he was confused by the markings on the runway and that they were faded and hard to see. Additionally; the signage that indicated where the hold short line was on runway 12/30 for runway 35 was not very prevalent and easy to recognize.

Title: PA32 PLT HAS A RWY INCURSION AT GCK.

Narrative: I HAD NOT BEEN TO THIS ARPT FOR OVER 16 YRS BUT WAS AWARE OF CONSTRUCTION AT THE ARPT THROUGH A NOTAM CHK THE MORNING OF THE FLT AND ARR EARLIER THAT MORNING. I WAS TAXIING OUT FOR IFR DEP. GCK GND CLRED ME TO RWY 35 VIA TXWY C; HOLD SHORT RWY 35. I READ BACK TAXI INSTRUCTIONS AND PROCEEDED TO TAXI. I DID NOT REALIZE CONSTRUCTION ON ARPT APRON BLOCKED TXWY A; THE TXWY THAT PARALLELS RWY 35/17 AND WHILE MISTAKENLY EXPECTING TO CROSS IT BEFORE GETTING TO RWY 35; INADVERTENTLY CROSSED THE HOLD SHORT LINE FOR RWY 35. I IMMEDIATELY STOPPED THE AIRPLANE WHEN I REALIZED I HAD JUST CROSSED THE HOLD SHORT LINE. GND CLRED ME TO BACK-TAXI RWY 35; R TURN ON RWY 30 WITH A 180 DEG TURN UPON XING THE HOLD SHORT LINE FOR RWY 35; AND THEN HOLD SHORT RWY 35. I AGAIN READ BACK THE TAXI CLRNC AND PROCEEDED TO TAXI. WAS ASKED TO SWITCH TO TWR FREQ WHILE TAXIING (SAME CTLR WORKING BOTH POS). MADE A R TURN ONTO RWY 30 BUT THE HOLD LINE PAINTED ON RWY 30 WAS NEARLY INVISIBLE AND TWR INFORMED ME I HAD PASSED THE HOLD SHORT LINE AND COULD NOW MAKE MY 180 DEG TURN; WHICH I DID AND PROCEEDED TO TAXI BACK TOWARD RWY 35. TWR SAID 'STOP! STOP!' WHICH I IMMEDIATELY DID. TWR SAID I HAD CROSSED THE HOLD SHORT LINE FOR RWY 35. I APOLOGIZED AND INFORMED THEM THAT THEIR HOLD SHORT LINE PAINTED FOR RWY 35 ON RWY 30 WAS NEARLY INVISIBLE. TWR AGREED BUT SAID THERE WAS A HOLD SHORT SIGN TO MY L ALONGSIDE THE RWY. I LOOKED; BUT THE ONLY SIGN I COULD SEE WAS A BLACK GND-BASED SIGN APPROX 30 INCHES HIGH BY 4 FT WIDE WITH NO WORDS OR MARKINGS. BEING UNFAMILIAR WITH THE ARPT AND WITH CONSTRUCTION GOING ON; I SHOULD HAVE ASKED FOR PROGRESSIVE TAXI. I HAD THE ARPT DIAGRAM OUT ON MY APCH PLATE FOR ILS RWY 35 BUT DID NOT REALIZE TXWY A WAS EXTENDED FROM THE S END OF THE APRON. I WAS EXPECTING TO CROSS A TXWY BEFORE GETTING TO RWY 35 AND IN MY MIND WAS LOOKING AHEAD TO THE RWY AS TXWY A. AS FAR AS THE HOLD SHORT LINE FOR RWY 35 PAINTED ON RWY 30; THERE WAS NO PAINT LEFT AND THE ONLY OBSERVABLE MARKING ON THE RWY WAS LIKE A SHADOW OF THE MARKING. AS FAR AS THE SIGNAGE TWR RPTED; AGAIN THE ONLY VISIBLE SIGN I SAW; EVEN AFTER I STOPPED; WAS THE BLACK SIGN MENTIONED EARLIER. THIS INTXN NEEDS TO BE MORE CLEARLY MARKED. AT NO TIME DID MY AIRPLANE INTERFERE WITH RWY 35 AS I IMMEDIATELY STOPPED WHEN I REALIZED MY FIRST MISTAKE AND AGAIN WHEN TOLD TO STOP BY THE TWR. AN AIR LINER LANDED ON RWY 35 WHILE I WAS STOPPED ON RWY 30 AND MY ACFT NOT NEAR ENOUGH TO BE A HAZARD FOR THEIR LNDG. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: RPTR STATED THAT THE TXWY WAS UNDER CONSTRUCTION AND THE TWR REQUESTED HE TAXI DOWN THE RWY AND EXIT ONTO ANOTHER RWY; DO A 180 DEG TURN AND HOLD SHORT OF THE DEP RWY. HE STATED THAT HE WAS CONFUSED BY THE MARKINGS ON THE RWY AND THAT THEY WERE FADED AND HARD TO SEE. ADDITIONALLY; THE SIGNAGE THAT INDICATED WHERE THE HOLD SHORT LINE WAS ON RWY 12/30 FOR RWY 35 WAS NOT VERY PREVALENT AND EASY TO RECOGNIZE.
