Narrative:

Called for taxi and was given taxi to runway 24R, hold short runway 24L. No specific instructions given and I asked if we were to join the line-up for takeoff. Ground replied with affirmative and taxi via the orange route. First officer read orange route to me as I taxied. Joined line-up as I compared orange route to 10-9 airport page specifically to locate the hold short for runway 24L as noted in the company pages as nonstandard. By the time I realized where it was, my first officer was saying stop. I stopped the aircraft with the nose across the hold short line. This is prior to turning the corner to approach the runway. My mistake for not being clear on the taxi instructions. Recommend we not use (be given) standard taxi instructions once the aircraft is taxiing. Too much head down time correlating standard taxi instructions with 10-9 page to actual position of aircraft on airport. Supplemental information from acn 529936: the first officer noticed the nose was crossing and informed the captain. The captain brought the aircraft to a stop with the nose over the hold line. Shortly thereafter, tower noticed and directed us to hold.

Title: AN MD80 CREW TAXIED PAST THE HOLD SHORT LINE DURING TAXI FOR TKOF AT CLE.

Narrative: CALLED FOR TAXI AND WAS GIVEN TAXI TO RWY 24R, HOLD SHORT RWY 24L. NO SPECIFIC INSTRUCTIONS GIVEN AND I ASKED IF WE WERE TO JOIN THE LINE-UP FOR TKOF. GND REPLIED WITH AFFIRMATIVE AND TAXI VIA THE ORANGE RTE. FO READ ORANGE RTE TO ME AS I TAXIED. JOINED LINE-UP AS I COMPARED ORANGE RTE TO 10-9 ARPT PAGE SPECIFICALLY TO LOCATE THE HOLD SHORT FOR RWY 24L AS NOTED IN THE COMPANY PAGES AS NONSTANDARD. BY THE TIME I REALIZED WHERE IT WAS, MY FO WAS SAYING STOP. I STOPPED THE ACFT WITH THE NOSE ACROSS THE HOLD SHORT LINE. THIS IS PRIOR TO TURNING THE CORNER TO APCH THE RWY. MY MISTAKE FOR NOT BEING CLR ON THE TAXI INSTRUCTIONS. RECOMMEND WE NOT USE (BE GIVEN) STANDARD TAXI INSTRUCTIONS ONCE THE ACFT IS TAXIING. TOO MUCH HEAD DOWN TIME CORRELATING STANDARD TAXI INSTRUCTIONS WITH 10-9 PAGE TO ACTUAL POS OF ACFT ON ARPT. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 529936: THE FO NOTICED THE NOSE WAS XING AND INFORMED THE CAPT. THE CAPT BROUGHT THE ACFT TO A STOP WITH THE NOSE OVER THE HOLD LINE. SHORTLY THEREAFTER, TWR NOTICED AND DIRECTED US TO HOLD.
