Narrative:

We were in a B737-400 jfk-ewr-IFR flight. Our flight was being vectored for the approach at ewr runway 22L. The aircraft was leveled at 5000 ft with flaps 1 degree, 190 KIAS assigned. Both of us noticed a TA conflict. Could not get a word in to the controller. Received RA. Followed the appropriate prescribed procedure. Climbed about 300 ft, advised ATC. Informed there were a lot of aircraft in the area. After the RA, noticed the other aircraft was at our same altitude. Do not know how close we came to each other. We were on instruments, too close for comfort.
