Narrative:
While at cruise at 13000 ft, we were issued a clearance to cross 45 mi southwest of ord at 8000 ft. Somehow we didn't realize that we had come within only 7 mi of the crossing fix with 5000 ft to lose. We missed the crossing fix by 2 mi. No conflict or danger but a mistake was made.
