Narrative:
(During the conduct of a far 141 commercial pilot check ride, a near miss occurred). The student called daytona approach and advised them we were inbound for landing. Daytona approach issued us a transponder code of (xd). The student read back the code as (xd) and we proceeded inbound toward the airport. At approximately 6 mi from daytona, I noticed an aircraft (a metroliner) converging on a collision course. I immediately lowered the nose of the aircraft and the metroliner passed almost directly over us. ATC issued an advisory to the metroliner and then asked 'aircraft squawking (xd) identify yourself.' I responded and idented us as '(GA X).' ATC then told us we assigned a code of (xj) not (xd). I told ATC we read back our assigned code as (xd). He told us to squawk the new code and proceed to the airport. I asked ATC what could be done in the future to prevent this type of occurrence. ATC said he prefers that aircraft remain clear of the class C airspace until radar idented. We continued to daytona and landed without incident.

Title: NMAC BTWN A SMA SEL TRAINING ACFT APCHING THE ARPT TO LAND AND A DEPARTING COMMUTER ACFT.
Narrative: (DURING THE CONDUCT OF A FAR 141 COMMERCIAL PLT CHK RIDE, A NEAR MISS OCCURRED). THE STUDENT CALLED DAYTONA APCH AND ADVISED THEM WE WERE INBOUND FOR LNDG. DAYTONA APCH ISSUED US A XPONDER CODE OF (XD). THE STUDENT READ BACK THE CODE AS (XD) AND WE PROCEEDED INBOUND TOWARD THE ARPT. AT APPROX 6 MI FROM DAYTONA, I NOTICED AN ACFT (A METROLINER) CONVERGING ON A COLLISION COURSE. I IMMEDIATELY LOWERED THE NOSE OF THE ACFT AND THE METROLINER PASSED ALMOST DIRECTLY OVER US. ATC ISSUED AN ADVISORY TO THE METROLINER AND THEN ASKED 'ACFT SQUAWKING (XD) IDENT YOURSELF.' I RESPONDED AND IDENTED US AS '(GA X).' ATC THEN TOLD US WE ASSIGNED A CODE OF (XJ) NOT (XD). I TOLD ATC WE READ BACK OUR ASSIGNED CODE AS (XD). HE TOLD US TO SQUAWK THE NEW CODE AND PROCEED TO THE ARPT. I ASKED ATC WHAT COULD BE DONE IN THE FUTURE TO PREVENT THIS TYPE OF OCCURRENCE. ATC SAID HE PREFERS THAT ACFT REMAIN CLR OF THE CLASS C AIRSPACE UNTIL RADAR IDENTED. WE CONTINUED TO DAYTONA AND LANDED WITHOUT INCIDENT.
