Narrative:

Taxiing into gate at dtw metropolitan-wayne airport, following marshaller's lighted wand signals. No vehicles or carts in immediate area. Taxiing slow, came to a normal stop on marshaller's direction, set brakes and shut down engines. Noticed jetway bridge was not being brought to aircraft. Contacted company radio and asked for someone to bring jetway to aircraft, for unloading of passenger. After 10 mins were told jetway had struck left engine on our B757. After 5 more mins were told aircraft engine had struck jetway while taxiing into the gate. Appeared paint was scraped on top of engine. Could not see any more damage because of very wet ramp area. Could not see taxi lead-in lines and had to rely on marshaller. Marshaller stopped us on dc-10 line instead of B-757 line causing us to contact jetway. Never felt contact. DC10 line is about 10 ft farther than 757 line, could not see either line. Supplemental information from acn 295773: upon arriving at the ramp we observed a gate marshal with upraised lighted wands ready to guide us into gate. The marshal brought his wands together very slowly over his head indicating stop and I brought the aircraft to a gentle stop. The 757 stop line was clearly marked with red cones. These cones are not visible from the cockpit while parking. The marshal said he was distracted while parking us and stopped us at the wrong line. The first officer and I feel there is nothing we could have done to change the outcome of this incident. We are dependent on the ground marshal and wing walkers to safely park us on the proper spot.
