Narrative:

Departed gso as flight gso-bna. Was given 2500 ft as initial altitude in clearance. Departed in VFR conditions and proceeded to climb. Captain was flying aircraft. As first officer I was completing climb checks when I was directed to contact departure. At 1500 ft I advised captain '1.5 for 2.5' after verbally completing checklist I checked on with departure. 'Flight out of 2300 ft for 2500 ft.' at about this same time we were entering freezing precipitation and going IMC. Snow was rather thick. Captain reached up to activate anti-ice/deice for engines and propellers. As a result busted altitude. Occurrence was result of many things happening at the same time and not enough attention to altitude. Captain indicated that glancing at altimeter set window he saw a '5' and thought 5000 ft out of habit.
