Narrative:

Raleigh approach had previously called traffic for me at 10-11 O'clock 5 mi an small aircraft Y headed southeast (same direction as I was traveling). I advised 'no joy.' as I left ral departure to change to unicom I began my descent out of 3500 ft. The small aircraft Y passed off my left wing -- surprisingly close. I feel air traffic should have kept us advised as he was in contact with both aircraft. Judging from what I saw I think that our radar target would have to have merged on air traffic radar. Usually rdu will keep you advised. I relied on what had previously been routine service. I will not again. I'll ask myself for further position reports on unsighted traffic.
