Narrative:

Local VFR night training flight originated at islip mcarthur airport XB30 local. We got ATIS and clearance then ground control and tower. ATIS mentioned a closed runway, birds in the area, a crane, and men and equipment along the south taxiway. We took off and contacted departure control to go 15 mi east for takeoff and landing practice at an uncontrolled field (brookhaven, ny). We exited the arsa and squawked XXXX. At XD00 local after experiencing some trouble with the pilot controled lighting at brookhaven, we decided to call it a night. Returning to islip we dialed up ATIS to hear the airport was closed to fixed wing traffic. There were only 3 airports within my fuel range: republic, which was inside the 30 mi mode C requirement (no mode C in my plane), islip, notamed closed so they could work on a runway, and brookhaven, which would probably be unlit when I got there. I am very familiar with islip so I figured it would be the safest. I talked to approach control who warned me it was closed but understood it was the best choice. Approach gave me a squawk and I went in to check the runway. I did a low pass. Found out where the workmen were then did a short landing on another runway. The next day I went to FSS and got the NOTAMS. It said isp closed to fixed wing traffic XD00 local to XM00 local for the past 2 days. I then went to the tower and spoke to the people who generate ATIS. Why was something as significant as that not put on the XA00 or XC00 ATIS? The reply was that ATIS was already too lengthy. I was wrong for not checking NOTAMS before every flight. I use the WX brief to get the recorded WX. They don't record the NOTAMS, but shouldn't it have been on the ATIS? Everything else is. Shouldn't ground control or the tower or clearance or departure control mention it? The incident was not reported to the FAA. I hope no one else gets stuck out there.

Title: REPORTER FLT LANDED AT CLOSED ARPT AFTER RETURNING FROM NIGHT TRAINING FLT.

Narrative: LOCAL VFR NIGHT TRAINING FLT ORIGINATED AT ISLIP MCARTHUR ARPT XB30 LCL. WE GOT ATIS AND CLRNC THEN GND CTL AND TWR. ATIS MENTIONED A CLOSED RWY, BIRDS IN THE AREA, A CRANE, AND MEN AND EQUIP ALONG THE S TXWY. WE TOOK OFF AND CONTACTED DEP CTL TO GO 15 MI E FOR TKOF AND LNDG PRACTICE AT AN UNCTLED FIELD (BROOKHAVEN, NY). WE EXITED THE ARSA AND SQUAWKED XXXX. AT XD00 LCL AFTER EXPERIENCING SOME TROUBLE WITH THE PLT CTLED LIGHTING AT BROOKHAVEN, WE DECIDED TO CALL IT A NIGHT. RETURNING TO ISLIP WE DIALED UP ATIS TO HEAR THE ARPT WAS CLOSED TO FIXED WING TFC. THERE WERE ONLY 3 ARPTS WITHIN MY FUEL RANGE: REPUBLIC, WHICH WAS INSIDE THE 30 MI MODE C REQUIREMENT (NO MODE C IN MY PLANE), ISLIP, NOTAMED CLOSED SO THEY COULD WORK ON A RWY, AND BROOKHAVEN, WHICH WOULD PROBABLY BE UNLIT WHEN I GOT THERE. I AM VERY FAMILIAR WITH ISLIP SO I FIGURED IT WOULD BE THE SAFEST. I TALKED TO APCH CTL WHO WARNED ME IT WAS CLOSED BUT UNDERSTOOD IT WAS THE BEST CHOICE. APCH GAVE ME A SQUAWK AND I WENT IN TO CHECK THE RWY. I DID A LOW PASS. FOUND OUT WHERE THE WORKMEN WERE THEN DID A SHORT LNDG ON ANOTHER RWY. THE NEXT DAY I WENT TO FSS AND GOT THE NOTAMS. IT SAID ISP CLOSED TO FIXED WING TFC XD00 LCL TO XM00 LCL FOR THE PAST 2 DAYS. I THEN WENT TO THE TWR AND SPOKE TO THE PEOPLE WHO GENERATE ATIS. WHY WAS SOMETHING AS SIGNIFICANT AS THAT NOT PUT ON THE XA00 OR XC00 ATIS? THE REPLY WAS THAT ATIS WAS ALREADY TOO LENGTHY. I WAS WRONG FOR NOT CHECKING NOTAMS BEFORE EVERY FLT. I USE THE WX BRIEF TO GET THE RECORDED WX. THEY DON'T RECORD THE NOTAMS, BUT SHOULDN'T IT HAVE BEEN ON THE ATIS? EVERYTHING ELSE IS. SHOULDN'T GND CTL OR THE TWR OR CLRNC OR DEP CTL MENTION IT? THE INCIDENT WAS NOT REPORTED TO THE FAA. I HOPE NO ONE ELSE GETS STUCK OUT THERE.
