Narrative:

Bos-atl departed gate on time (FAA air carrier safety inspector in jumpseat) taxied to runway 27 for takeoff. All procedures and checklists routine. When takeoff power (EPR) applied and roll began, first officer's sliding window crept open during acceleration and low speed (80 KTS or less) abort initiated with no problem. After turn off window recycled and locked. Brake temperatures checked, checklists reread, and flight then made normal takeoff and flight to atl where maintenance met aircraft. Supervisors made examination of window and remarked that problem has occurred with fleet in past due to rigging problems and that they would rerig window for next flight. Normal preflight observing 'closed' sign handle forward and cylinder at 90 degrees did not prevent incident. It was fortunate that window opened at low speed and not at high speed takeoff or while airborne. These windows have no warning (caution) lights, as do those on entry and cargo doors, verifying to the pilots by EICAS that they are not locked. Perhaps these lights or more positive locking mechanism can be considered.

Title: ACR LGT FO'S SLIDING WINDOW STARTS TO OPEN DURING TKOF ROLL. TKOF ABORTED, WINDOW RECYCLED AND TAXIED BACK FOR SECOND TKOF.

Narrative: BOS-ATL DEPARTED GATE ON TIME (FAA ACR SAFETY INSPECTOR IN JUMPSEAT) TAXIED TO RWY 27 FOR TKOF. ALL PROCS AND CHKLISTS ROUTINE. WHEN TKOF PWR (EPR) APPLIED AND ROLL BEGAN, F/O'S SLIDING WINDOW CREPT OPEN DURING ACCELERATION AND LOW SPD (80 KTS OR LESS) ABORT INITIATED WITH NO PROB. AFTER TURN OFF WINDOW RECYCLED AND LOCKED. BRAKE TEMPS CHKED, CHKLISTS REREAD, AND FLT THEN MADE NORMAL TKOF AND FLT TO ATL WHERE MAINT MET ACFT. SUPVRS MADE EXAMINATION OF WINDOW AND REMARKED THAT PROB HAS OCCURRED WITH FLEET IN PAST DUE TO RIGGING PROBS AND THAT THEY WOULD RERIG WINDOW FOR NEXT FLT. NORMAL PREFLT OBSERVING 'CLOSED' SIGN HANDLE FORWARD AND CYLINDER AT 90 DEGS DID NOT PREVENT INCIDENT. IT WAS FORTUNATE THAT WINDOW OPENED AT LOW SPD AND NOT AT HIGH SPD TKOF OR WHILE AIRBORNE. THESE WINDOWS HAVE NO WARNING (CAUTION) LIGHTS, AS DO THOSE ON ENTRY AND CARGO DOORS, VERIFYING TO THE PLTS BY EICAS THAT THEY ARE NOT LOCKED. PERHAPS THESE LIGHTS OR MORE POSITIVE LOCKING MECHANISM CAN BE CONSIDERED.
