Narrative:

Flight left ogg for hnm at 500' and a mi off shore. We left ogg departure just past opana point (eastbound). Not even a minute after the frequency change the copilot yells, turn left. We were empty so I made a steep turn to the left to evade whatever was there. The first officer said it was a helicopter. I could not see the helicopter from my side. We had just made a position report on 122.9 for other traffic on the north shore of maui. The helicopter did not say anything at that time. (Opana point is almost 10 NM east of ogg on the north shore of maui). According to the first officer the turn was needed to avoid it from coming any closer to us or we to it.
