Narrative:

Over the smo VOR were instructed to turn to a heading of 070 degrees and maintain 4;000 ft. Shortly after; we were given instructions that we were going to be following a boeing 767 for runway 24R. ATC then gave us a heading of 120 degrees and a descent to 3;000 ft; we then quire ATC if they wanted us to follow the B767; ATC told us 'yes eventually'. So we turned to join behind the B767; when ATC informed it was the wrong aircraft we were following; we were then vectored out of sequence and told to climb to 4;000 ft. ATC vectored us back into sequence to intercept to ILS for runway 24R. We were told to contact lax tower; and landed uneventfully. No TCAS RA or TA was observed during our turn following the wrong aircraft. On our crew debrief we came to the understanding that it was miscommunication between ATC and the crew; so in future if there is any doubt we will ask for a vector us into sequence so this will not occur.
