Narrative:

Everything was normal on flight. We noticed loss of cockpit; overhead; center; captain; first officer and fcp back panel lighting. Initial troubleshooting found all circuit breakers in normal closed position. Within a min or so; we noticed a faint electrical burning smell. Simultaneously; flight attendant called cockpit notifying us of a faint electrical burning smell in forward cabin. As a precaution; captain pulled all 4 circuit breakers for instrument panel back lighting. Immediately; captain became PF; declared an emergency with ATC; requested diversion to nearest suitable airport and began rapid descent. Landed safely. We stopped aircraft on an open ramp and assessed situation with crash fire rescue equipment and cabin crew. We determined no need for evacuate/evacuation; and proceeded to gate. We deplaned passenger.
