Narrative:

While being vectored to the localizer (ZZZ) we saw and smelled smoke in the cockpit (oily exhaust smell). I immediately declared an emergency with final approach. The first officer was PF. I instructed the approach controller to have the equipment ready. I received a 'smoke toilet' caution message on the EICAS and instructed the flight attendant to get a fire extinguisher and check the lavatory. He reported a smoke smell; but no visible smoke or flames. We landed without incident; taxied off the runway; and stopped to assess. The smoke was diminishing so we opted not to evacuate/evacuation on the taxiway. I had the fire truck follow the aircraft to the gate where we shut down the engines and deplaned immediately.
