Narrative:

Departed L18 on a pleasure flight to sba. I flight planned the flight using the duats system and checked WX; NOTAMS; and tfr's for the route. I planned to transit the lax TCA through one of the VFR corridors listed on the lax TCA chart utilizing VOR navigation. I was navigating towards lax utilizing the lax TCA chart and informed the controller I was requesting the 'shoreline' transition. I was cleared into class B airspace by a subsequent controller and was issued a climb clearance to 6500 ft MSL for the crossing. I found it distracting to keep flipping the TCA chart over and back and folding it to fit on my lap to view both sides. I asked my passenger to hand me my copy of a publication which I knew contained an lax class B foldout and corridor information. I had purchased this publication about 2 yrs ago and used it infrequently. Because I was unsure of its currency; I ordered a complete new one a couple of months ago. Unfortunately; as I was gathering my charts prior to leaving my home for the airport; the old non-current copy of the publication was inadvertently placed into my flight bag. Approaching the lax VOR; I looked down at the publication's lax TCA 'shoreline' transition and started to follow the depicted 'shoreline' transition. The procedure had changed from paralleling the lax shoreline .5 NM to 1.0 NM off shore; to directly overflying the lax VOR. Unfortunately; I was following the non-current procedure until the controller informed me I was in a possible 'pilot deviation' situation. He then issued me a heading and told me to copy a phone number to call his supervisor. I exited class B airspace and continued to sba whereupon I phoned the control facility and spoke with an ATC supervisor about the incident. To prevent a recurrence; I am destroying all out-dated charts as they become obsolete.

Title: PLT OF A BE35 FLEW THROUGH THE LAX VFR CORRIDOR WITH AN OUTDATED CHART. CTLR PROVIDED VECTORS.

Narrative: DEPARTED L18 ON A PLEASURE FLT TO SBA. I FLT PLANNED THE FLT USING THE DUATS SYS AND CHKED WX; NOTAMS; AND TFR'S FOR THE RTE. I PLANNED TO TRANSIT THE LAX TCA THROUGH ONE OF THE VFR CORRIDORS LISTED ON THE LAX TCA CHART UTILIZING VOR NAV. I WAS NAVING TOWARDS LAX UTILIZING THE LAX TCA CHART AND INFORMED THE CTLR I WAS REQUESTING THE 'SHORELINE' TRANSITION. I WAS CLRED INTO CLASS B AIRSPACE BY A SUBSEQUENT CTLR AND WAS ISSUED A CLB CLRNC TO 6500 FT MSL FOR THE XING. I FOUND IT DISTRACTING TO KEEP FLIPPING THE TCA CHART OVER AND BACK AND FOLDING IT TO FIT ON MY LAP TO VIEW BOTH SIDES. I ASKED MY PAX TO HAND ME MY COPY OF A PUB WHICH I KNEW CONTAINED AN LAX CLASS B FOLDOUT AND CORRIDOR INFO. I HAD PURCHASED THIS PUB ABOUT 2 YRS AGO AND USED IT INFREQUENTLY. BECAUSE I WAS UNSURE OF ITS CURRENCY; I ORDERED A COMPLETE NEW ONE A COUPLE OF MONTHS AGO. UNFORTUNATELY; AS I WAS GATHERING MY CHARTS PRIOR TO LEAVING MY HOME FOR THE ARPT; THE OLD NON-CURRENT COPY OF THE PUB WAS INADVERTENTLY PLACED INTO MY FLT BAG. APCHING THE LAX VOR; I LOOKED DOWN AT THE PUB'S LAX TCA 'SHORELINE' TRANSITION AND STARTED TO FOLLOW THE DEPICTED 'SHORELINE' TRANSITION. THE PROC HAD CHANGED FROM PARALLELING THE LAX SHORELINE .5 NM TO 1.0 NM OFF SHORE; TO DIRECTLY OVERFLYING THE LAX VOR. UNFORTUNATELY; I WAS FOLLOWING THE NON-CURRENT PROC UNTIL THE CTLR INFORMED ME I WAS IN A POSSIBLE 'PLTDEV' SITUATION. HE THEN ISSUED ME A HDG AND TOLD ME TO COPY A PHONE NUMBER TO CALL HIS SUPVR. I EXITED CLASS B AIRSPACE AND CONTINUED TO SBA WHEREUPON I PHONED THE CTL FACILITY AND SPOKE WITH AN ATC SUPVR ABOUT THE INCIDENT. TO PREVENT A RECURRENCE; I AM DESTROYING ALL OUT-DATED CHARTS AS THEY BECOME OBSOLETE.
