Narrative:

I was providing ATC ojti at ZTL sector 39. Developmental controller descended CRJ7 to FL330 landing clt approximately 10 NM from vxv. B712 was in cruise northbound approximately 5 NM south of vxv. Developmental recognized that descent clearance put CRJ7 in conflict with B712; which was level at FL320. I instructed developmental to vector both aircraft. Due to closure rae; turns were insufficient to maintain lateral separation. During the event; conflict alert was activated. At no time was there a serious risk to either aircraft. Error occurred at 4.9 NM and 300 ft as crj descended on a vector behind B717.
