Narrative:

Landing gear problem. Left gear showed unsafe when lowered. Advised tower and climbed back to 3000 ft and flew east of airport to run checklists. Tower and aircraft at runway advised it looked down. Ran all checklist and emergency gear extension. No change, declared emergency and had crash fire rescue equipment rolled. Had flight attendants run evacuate/evacuation checklists. Landed and advised #2 tire had thrown tread and taken wire to sensor out and also taken the down and locked strip off. When first officer went to look for the gear down he was unable to verify the gear strips locked. First officer and flight attendants did a great job.
