Narrative:

While departing ZZZ during our takeoff roll and prior to reaching V1, we had a service door open warning on EICAS and the takeoff was aborted. We followed the aom procedures and returned to the gate. After consulting with maintenance and the flight attendant, we determined the handle on the service door was not pushed down all the way and the condition of the runway jarred the handle enough to illuminate the service door EICAS warning.
