Narrative:
We landed on runway 31C at mdw. Mdw had runway 31R/13L and runway 4L/22R closed. Also, taxiway north and other txwys were closed. I briefed that we would exit the runway to the left. After landing, I exited the runway to the left. Ground then told us we should have exited right. They told us to hold short of runway 31L. Runway 31L is very narrow and I thought it was a taxiway. I crossed onto runway 31L. Tower then told us to cross runway 31L since they had a light cessna on final. I believe we should have looked at the diagrams of the airport more carefully and determined where we would hold short. I had been to mdw many times before and was familiar with the other runways and txwys and I probably believed that it would not be difficult to determine where to hold short. I was also in a hurry to exit the runway as we had traffic right behind us.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: CL65 FLT CREW HAS RWY INCURSION AT MDW.
Narrative: WE LANDED ON RWY 31C AT MDW. MDW HAD RWY 31R/13L AND RWY 4L/22R CLOSED. ALSO, TXWY N AND OTHER TXWYS WERE CLOSED. I BRIEFED THAT WE WOULD EXIT THE RWY TO THE L. AFTER LNDG, I EXITED THE RWY TO THE L. GND THEN TOLD US WE SHOULD HAVE EXITED R. THEY TOLD US TO HOLD SHORT OF RWY 31L. RWY 31L IS VERY NARROW AND I THOUGHT IT WAS A TXWY. I CROSSED ONTO RWY 31L. TWR THEN TOLD US TO CROSS RWY 31L SINCE THEY HAD A LIGHT CESSNA ON FINAL. I BELIEVE WE SHOULD HAVE LOOKED AT THE DIAGRAMS OF THE ARPT MORE CAREFULLY AND DETERMINED WHERE WE WOULD HOLD SHORT. I HAD BEEN TO MDW MANY TIMES BEFORE AND WAS FAMILIAR WITH THE OTHER RWYS AND TXWYS AND I PROBABLY BELIEVED THAT IT WOULD NOT BE DIFFICULT TO DETERMINE WHERE TO HOLD SHORT. I WAS ALSO IN A HURRY TO EXIT THE RWY AS WE HAD TFC RIGHT BEHIND US.
