Narrative:

Flight operated from cak airport. I was not present in the cockpit when first officer obtained a clearance from cak ATC and he completed all preparation for the next departure, including setting altitude selector to 6000 ft. Arrival of a jump seater from air carrier interrupted checklist part 'takeoff and departure' briefing. After takeoff, tower delayed switching us to departure. Passing 2500 ft, I asked tower, 'air carrier to departure.' she answered, 'not yet.' after passing 5000 ft we were told to call departure 'air carrier passing 5500 ft for 6000 ft.' 'akron-canton departure, air carrier climb and maintain 8000 ft.' flight proceeded to destination without any incident. At destination, I was told to call akron-canton approach control and they informed me that clearance after takeoff was to climb and maintain 4000 ft.
