Narrative:

Location: TTT 150 degree radial, 25 DME. Climbing through 17000 ft for FL230 on a 170 degree vector to intercept TTT 156 degree radial. Radar was on for departure, there were scattered returns, but flight path looked clear. We began to encounter moderate turbulence. A quick look at the radar showed some return close aboard on the right. I asked the first officer (who was flying) to come left. We rolled out on a heading of 150 degrees just before center asked our heading. I told him we were correcting back to 170 degrees, but our heading was 150 degrees. He asked if we had gotten clearance to deviate on the previous frequency. I said no. He said he would appreciate a call in the future as we were headed toward inbound traffic. I said sorry, but we didn't have time. Total time from 170 degrees to 150 degrees and back to 170 degrees was less than 2 mins. I felt we had to get away from this storm immediately because of the severity of the turbulence.

Title: A B727-200 FLC DEVIATES AROUND A TSTM WITHOUT GETTING AN AMENDED CLRNC FROM ATC WHILE ON A DEP VECTOR OUT OF DFW, TX.

Narrative: LOCATION: TTT 150 DEG RADIAL, 25 DME. CLBING THROUGH 17000 FT FOR FL230 ON A 170 DEG VECTOR TO INTERCEPT TTT 156 DEG RADIAL. RADAR WAS ON FOR DEP, THERE WERE SCATTERED RETURNS, BUT FLT PATH LOOKED CLR. WE BEGAN TO ENCOUNTER MODERATE TURB. A QUICK LOOK AT THE RADAR SHOWED SOME RETURN CLOSE ABOARD ON THE R. I ASKED THE FO (WHO WAS FLYING) TO COME L. WE ROLLED OUT ON A HDG OF 150 DEGS JUST BEFORE CTR ASKED OUR HDG. I TOLD HIM WE WERE CORRECTING BACK TO 170 DEGS, BUT OUR HDG WAS 150 DEGS. HE ASKED IF WE HAD GOTTEN CLRNC TO DEVIATE ON THE PREVIOUS FREQ. I SAID NO. HE SAID HE WOULD APPRECIATE A CALL IN THE FUTURE AS WE WERE HEADED TOWARD INBOUND TFC. I SAID SORRY, BUT WE DIDN'T HAVE TIME. TOTAL TIME FROM 170 DEGS TO 150 DEGS AND BACK TO 170 DEGS WAS LESS THAN 2 MINS. I FELT WE HAD TO GET AWAY FROM THIS STORM IMMEDIATELY BECAUSE OF THE SEVERITY OF THE TURB.
