Narrative:

We were assigned the breezy point climb out of jfk. The climb calls for taking off; flying direct to cri VOR and then flying the 223 degree radial outbound. Neither myself nor my first officer knew how to program the FMS for this climb. Therefore; I took off in raw data. As I approached the VOR; I started a turn to intercept the radial. I soon realized I didn't lead the turn by enough and flew through the outbound radial. I was scolded by new york departure and given a phone number to call. After landing; I called the controller and he explained to me the close proximity of the lga airspace. There were a few causes to this error. First; I was not properly trained on all the functions of the crj FMS. I had no idea how to program a radial fix into the FMS. I was also tired due to the scheduled 8 hour reduced rest the night before followed by a 15 hour duty day. It also didn't help that I was unfamiliar with the jfk airspace.
