Narrative:

Tower cleared us to position and hold approaching intersection F for runway 25R. As we turned into position, we were cleared for takeoff and first officer acknowledged takeoff clearance. After standard power was set at approximately 70 KTS tower said aircraft X position and hold, so I elected to abort. Tower said we were not cleared for takeoff. We said we were. But takeoff was aborted and we turned off the runway to ensure safe operations. We were again cleared into position and hold approaching taxiway F and again cleared to position and hold as we turned on the runway and then shortly thereafter cleared for takeoff. Asked them to check the tapes and called back when we were above 18000 ft. Tower said we were correct, we did have takeoff clearance the first time, but I would rather have him call abort any day than have confusion on the takeoff roll.
