Narrative:

Confusion over ATC instructions. We departed on runway 12L on the msp 9 departure, with an initial heading of 100 degrees, and an initial altitude of 7000 ft. Upon contacting msp departure on 125.75, we were given a heading of 270 degrees. We turned to 270 degrees. The next instruction was to climb to 17000 ft. We started the climb immediately after that. We were told to turn to 010 degrees and asked what our heading was. We told msp departure our instructions and she (msp departure) started arguing with us about our initial clearance. We were already thru 7300 ft when she told us to maintain 7000 ft. There were several more changes about heading and altitude and we complied with further instructions. We complied with all instructions and read back all clrncs. There was never any confusion or doubt, from our prospective, as to our clearance. The departure controller seemed confused as to our clearance and what she had given to whom. There was no conflict to our knowledge and all instructions were complied with. This ATC exchange occurred at XA40Z. Dispatch was notified at XA49Z for consultation. Talked to msp approach control and they said the problem was with them, no paper work necessary.

Narrative: CONFUSION OVER ATC INSTRUCTIONS. WE DEPARTED ON RWY 12L ON THE MSP 9 DEP, WITH AN INITIAL HDG OF 100 DEGS, AND AN INITIAL ALT OF 7000 FT. UPON CONTACTING MSP DEP ON 125.75, WE WERE GIVEN A HDG OF 270 DEGS. WE TURNED TO 270 DEGS. THE NEXT INSTRUCTION WAS TO CLB TO 17000 FT. WE STARTED THE CLB IMMEDIATELY AFTER THAT. WE WERE TOLD TO TURN TO 010 DEGS AND ASKED WHAT OUR HDG WAS. WE TOLD MSP DEP OUR INSTRUCTIONS AND SHE (MSP DEP) STARTED ARGUING WITH US ABOUT OUR INITIAL CLRNC. WE WERE ALREADY THRU 7300 FT WHEN SHE TOLD US TO MAINTAIN 7000 FT. THERE WERE SEVERAL MORE CHANGES ABOUT HDG AND ALT AND WE COMPLIED WITH FURTHER INSTRUCTIONS. WE COMPLIED WITH ALL INSTRUCTIONS AND READ BACK ALL CLRNCS. THERE WAS NEVER ANY CONFUSION OR DOUBT, FROM OUR PROSPECTIVE, AS TO OUR CLRNC. THE DEP CTLR SEEMED CONFUSED AS TO OUR CLRNC AND WHAT SHE HAD GIVEN TO WHOM. THERE WAS NO CONFLICT TO OUR KNOWLEDGE AND ALL INSTRUCTIONS WERE COMPLIED WITH. THIS ATC EXCHANGE OCCURRED AT XA40Z. DISPATCH WAS NOTIFIED AT XA49Z FOR CONSULTATION. TALKED TO MSP APCH CTL AND THEY SAID THE PROB WAS WITH THEM, NO PAPER WORK NECESSARY.
