Narrative:

We were given clearance to fly from luk. The initial part of clearance was runway heading to 2500 ft. The sic got the clearance on the previous taxi in and set up the radios accordingly. I briefed the departure and takeoff like I always do and stated that I was going to 4000 ft which was in the altitude alerter . We were cleared to take off, when climbing through 3000 ft I told sic to look at clearance that for some reason I thought we were supposed to level lower. She confirmed she had written down 2500 ft but mistakenly set 4000 ft. I immediately went back down to 2500 ft with no further occurrence. Departure said to continue climb when we got with him and said nothing of possible altitude deviation. I believe a slower brief, without interruptions, and with sic confirming my brief to what she has written should have helped in this situation. Maybe not being in a rush to get the clearance on the taxi in would help as well. Then both of you can listen and not be busy taxiing.

Title: FLC OF A CESSNA 550 OVERSHOT ASSIGNED ALT ON INITIAL DEP CLB AND RETURNED AT ONCE UPON NOTICING THEIR ERROR.

Narrative: WE WERE GIVEN CLRNC TO FLY FROM LUK. THE INITIAL PART OF CLRNC WAS RWY HEADING TO 2500 FT. THE SIC GOT THE CLRNC ON THE PREVIOUS TAXI IN AND SET UP THE RADIOS ACCORDINGLY. I BRIEFED THE DEP AND TKOF LIKE I ALWAYS DO AND STATED THAT I WAS GOING TO 4000 FT WHICH WAS IN THE ALT ALERTER . WE WERE CLRED TO TAKE OFF, WHEN CLBING THROUGH 3000 FT I TOLD SIC TO LOOK AT CLRNC THAT FOR SOME REASON I THOUGHT WE WERE SUPPOSED TO LEVEL LOWER. SHE CONFIRMED SHE HAD WRITTEN DOWN 2500 FT BUT MISTAKENLY SET 4000 FT. I IMMEDIATELY WENT BACK DOWN TO 2500 FT WITH NO FURTHER OCCURRENCE. DEP SAID TO CONTINUE CLB WHEN WE GOT WITH HIM AND SAID NOTHING OF POSSIBLE ALTDEV. I BELIEVE A SLOWER BRIEF, WITHOUT INTERRUPTIONS, AND WITH SIC CONFIRMING MY BRIEF TO WHAT SHE HAS WRITTEN SHOULD HAVE HELPED IN THIS SIT. MAYBE NOT BEING IN A RUSH TO GET THE CLRNC ON THE TAXI IN WOULD HELP AS WELL. THEN BOTH OF YOU CAN LISTEN AND NOT BE BUSY TAXIING.
