Narrative:

We were on our cleared flight plan routing of gmh VOR direct to col VOR, then the arrival STAR to fra (eddf). Passing gmh we turned direct to col and changed to new frequency. ATC asked our heading. We advised heading and direct col. ATC gave us a vector and indicated that our clearance to col was not what he was expecting. If this controller or the previous one needed or expected us to do something different than our clearance, we were never advised.
