Narrative:
Thunderstorms in area washington. Departure on 120.65 asked us to turn into a line of thunderstorms northwest of iad. Told ATC we would need a deviation to the south for approximately 35 mi due to a line of thunderstorms. ATC would not let us turn away from the storms. We asked ATC for the deviation 3 times and they still would not let us deviate. Exercised emergency authority/authorized to keep out of the line of thunderstorms. Deviated to the south for approximately 35 mi and then turned back on course.
