Narrative:
Requested clearance to sdl through class B airspace, IFR. Approach indicated that we would have to go the long way around. We asked to cancel and proceed VFR to sdl. Controller acknowledged the cancellation. Requested clearance into class B airspace and descent to below 4000 ft, the floor of the class B airspace. We turned toward the north to avoid the lower class B airspace. The controller would not accept this and advised us to turn back. We did, no additional conversation about this issue. A short time later we received a frequency change.
