Narrative:

After clearing runway 26L I was given instructions by phx ground to taxi to the gate by taxiway east. As I turned into the ramp area, I immediately encountered a light twin propeller airplane on taxiway D to my left. I had to brake fast not to hit him. The light twin also braked when he noticed me turning into him. If we both had not stopped there would have been a ground accident. I asked the controller if my taxi instructions were to the gate. His reply was I was cleared to the gate, but he thought the twin would beat me to the entranceway. I was never informed of the twin's location.
