Narrative:

After departing smo, we were given an initial altitude of 3000 ft. We were handed off to socal control, at which time we were given a higher altitude of 6000 ft. The normal altitude alerter tone at 1000 ft before assigned altitude failed to operate. The crew caught it at 6500 ft and initiated a descent back down to 6000 ft.

Title: CPR JET OVERSHOT ASSIGNED ALT ON CLB IN LAX AIRSPACE.

Narrative: AFTER DEPARTING SMO, WE WERE GIVEN AN INITIAL ALT OF 3000 FT. WE WERE HANDED OFF TO SOCAL CTL, AT WHICH TIME WE WERE GIVEN A HIGHER ALT OF 6000 FT. THE NORMAL ALT ALERTER TONE AT 1000 FT BEFORE ASSIGNED ALT FAILED TO OPERATE. THE CREW CAUGHT IT AT 6500 FT AND INITIATED A DSCNT BACK DOWN TO 6000 FT.
