Narrative:

We were given FL230 aircraft was at FL240 when we realized it hadn't caught at FL230. Aircraft had FMS and when we initially got direct to dta (VOR) autoplt didn't pick up. I shut off autoplt and got reestablished on direct. Put autoplt back on but not altitude select. We did inform center at the time they then gave us FL240. Sunlight on panel obscured the indicators. Therefore it was difficult to detect that altitude was not on without blocking the sun.
