Narrative:

I took off and on my way to hemet airport I had an engine failure and had to ask socal approach for a priority landing, which was granted. We believe the fuel pump went out on the plane. A full report was given at the time to the riverside, ca, FSDO. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: reporter states that the aircraft is a lancair. He has 85 hours in this specific plane and has had some 'burbles' from the engine on previous flts but nothing more happened. He has become aware that the lip on the fuel vents was installed incorrectly and probably played a part in the incident. The fuel pump is also suspect. He was turning and had low manifold pressure at the time of the incident and feels that the combination of factors caused the engine to fail this time. He did not declare an emergency, just requested priority landing.

Title: PLT OF LC30 LANCAIR HAS ENG FAILURE ON DEP. REQUESTS 'PRIORITY LNDG' AND ATC GRANTS IT.

Narrative: I TOOK OFF AND ON MY WAY TO HEMET ARPT I HAD AN ENG FAILURE AND HAD TO ASK SOCAL APCH FOR A PRIORITY LNDG, WHICH WAS GRANTED. WE BELIEVE THE FUEL PUMP WENT OUT ON THE PLANE. A FULL RPT WAS GIVEN AT THE TIME TO THE RIVERSIDE, CA, FSDO. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: RPTR STATES THAT THE ACFT IS A LANCAIR. HE HAS 85 HRS IN THIS SPECIFIC PLANE AND HAS HAD SOME 'BURBLES' FROM THE ENG ON PREVIOUS FLTS BUT NOTHING MORE HAPPENED. HE HAS BECOME AWARE THAT THE LIP ON THE FUEL VENTS WAS INSTALLED INCORRECTLY AND PROBABLY PLAYED A PART IN THE INCIDENT. THE FUEL PUMP IS ALSO SUSPECT.
