Narrative:

On approach to penang, received a late letdown and 80 degree intercept for runway 4 to pick up and begin the ILS at about 9 mi and 4000 ft. This required time to get established on the localizer and a maximum rate of descent for a safe landing. There was also confusion with approach control due to language. Being preoccupied with the challenging intercept and descent and then confused with what approach controller was saying, we apparently missed getting a landing clearance from tower (although we did switch to tower). Ground advised we had not been cleared to land. There was no conflict either airborne or on the runway. Supplemental information from acn 404079: we were preoccupied with bad turn on.

Title: A WDB FREIGHTER LANDS AT PEN, FO, WITHOUT BENEFIT OF A LNDG CLRNC. CREW WAS ON TWR FREQ BUT DID NOT CHK IN WITH LCL CTLR. GND CTLR ADVISES CREW OF THE TRANSGRESSION.

Narrative: ON APCH TO PENANG, RECEIVED A LATE LETDOWN AND 80 DEG INTERCEPT FOR RWY 4 TO PICK UP AND BEGIN THE ILS AT ABOUT 9 MI AND 4000 FT. THIS REQUIRED TIME TO GET ESTABLISHED ON THE LOC AND A MAX RATE OF DSCNT FOR A SAFE LNDG. THERE WAS ALSO CONFUSION WITH APCH CTL DUE TO LANGUAGE. BEING PREOCCUPIED WITH THE CHALLENGING INTERCEPT AND DSCNT AND THEN CONFUSED WITH WHAT APCH CTLR WAS SAYING, WE APPARENTLY MISSED GETTING A LNDG CLRNC FROM TWR (ALTHOUGH WE DID SWITCH TO TWR). GND ADVISED WE HAD NOT BEEN CLRED TO LAND. THERE WAS NO CONFLICT EITHER AIRBORNE OR ON THE RWY. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 404079: WE WERE PREOCCUPIED WITH BAD TURN ON.
