Narrative:

I was working ar-3 in the la arrival area at sct. The CI3 (supervisor) informed me that ar-2, the sector that I was feeding, was no longer taking any aircraft from me (reasons unknown). I had air carrier X (B747) on the sadde STAR descending to 12000 ft. Sector 14 at ZLA was in holding with an air carrier Y DC10 at vtu VOR at 15000 ft. I saw that the DC10 was northbound from vtu and I was south of fim at 15000 ft. I turned air carrier X left immediately and climbed him to 16000 ft. They still passed too close. I reported this to my supervisor who said, 'I don't see the problem with it.' there was complete chaos in the sectors that night because there are no position descriptions defining controller duties for AR1, AR2, AR3, AR4, CI3, and CI2.
