Narrative:

SID had climb altitude of 4000 ft. When we approached 4000 ft, cleared to 5000 ft and subsequently 6000 ft (transition 5000 ft). Late adjustment of altimeters from 1029 to 1013. Altitude alert horn sounded twice before and after adjustment. Approaching 6000 ft, 'yaw damper lower' light on annunciator panel illuminated. Momentary distraction caused us to fly through assigned flight level. Correction started soon after altitude alert horn sounded passing 6300 ft. Correction took effect passing through 6500 ft (inertia) and 30 seconds later we were leveling at 6000 ft. Frankfort departure asked about the altitude excursion about the same time the horn sounded and later said there was opposite traffic at 7000 ft. The flight engineer said later that he had seen traffic at 9 O'clock position that looked as if it was possibly turning. I was never told that the aircraft took evasive action. Our aircraft was not TCASII equipped. The cloud tops were approximately 5800 ft MSL.

Title: A FREIGHTER FLC IN AN ACR B747F OVERSHOT THEIR ALT DUE TO A MISSET ALTIMETER. THE DISTR THAT THIS CAUSED WAS AN INDICATION OF AN ACFT EQUIP MALFUNCTION ON THEIR PANEL.

Narrative: SID HAD CLB ALT OF 4000 FT. WHEN WE APCHED 4000 FT, CLRED TO 5000 FT AND SUBSEQUENTLY 6000 FT (TRANSITION 5000 FT). LATE ADJUSTMENT OF ALTIMETERS FROM 1029 TO 1013. ALT ALERT HORN SOUNDED TWICE BEFORE AND AFTER ADJUSTMENT. APCHING 6000 FT, 'YAW DAMPER LOWER' LIGHT ON ANNUNCIATOR PANEL ILLUMINATED. MOMENTARY DISTR CAUSED US TO FLY THROUGH ASSIGNED FLT LEVEL. CORRECTION STARTED SOON AFTER ALT ALERT HORN SOUNDED PASSING 6300 FT. CORRECTION TOOK EFFECT PASSING THROUGH 6500 FT (INERTIA) AND 30 SECONDS LATER WE WERE LEVELING AT 6000 FT. FRANKFORT DEP ASKED ABOUT THE ALT EXCURSION ABOUT THE SAME TIME THE HORN SOUNDED AND LATER SAID THERE WAS OPPOSITE TFC AT 7000 FT. THE FE SAID LATER THAT HE HAD SEEN TFC AT 9 O'CLOCK POS THAT LOOKED AS IF IT WAS POSSIBLY TURNING. I WAS NEVER TOLD THAT THE ACFT TOOK EVASIVE ACTION. OUR ACFT WAS NOT TCASII EQUIPPED. THE CLOUD TOPS WERE APPROX 5800 FT MSL.
