While troubleshooting a landing gear indicating problem, captain inadvertently descended below assigned altitude. Altitude alerter went off and immediate correction was made. Assigned 4000 ft, descended to 3600 ft before correcting. Crew concept broke down, assigned PF got involved in troubleshooting and was distraction from his duty.
