Narrative:

From dtw to beh. We were at 4000 ft approximately 10 mi east of keeler VOR. Sbn approach cleared us direct to keeler VOR, keeler transition to runway 27 at beh. We crossed keeler and began the transition and descended to 2300 ft. Sbn approach notified us at about 3500 ft that we should be at 4000 ft and that we were not cleared for the approach. We immediately climbed back to 4000 ft. He then cleared us for the ILS runway 27 at beh without further incidence. The first officer and myself both understood that we were cleared for the approach when sbn approach cleared us direct keeler, keeler transition for ILS runway 27 beh.

Narrative: FROM DTW TO BEH. WE WERE AT 4000 FT APPROX 10 MI E OF KEELER VOR. SBN APCH CLRED US DIRECT TO KEELER VOR, KEELER TRANSITION TO RWY 27 AT BEH. WE CROSSED KEELER AND BEGAN THE TRANSITION AND DSNDED TO 2300 FT. SBN APCH NOTIFIED US AT ABOUT 3500 FT THAT WE SHOULD BE AT 4000 FT AND THAT WE WERE NOT CLRED FOR THE APCH. WE IMMEDIATELY CLBED BACK TO 4000 FT. HE THEN CLRED US FOR THE ILS RWY 27 AT BEH WITHOUT FURTHER INCIDENCE. THE FO AND MYSELF BOTH UNDERSTOOD THAT WE WERE CLRED FOR THE APCH WHEN SBN APCH CLRED US DIRECT KEELER, KEELER TRANSITION FOR ILS RWY 27 BEH.
