Narrative:

On dec/wed/97, we departed pit to ewr. Passing through FL200 we were greeted with a #2 cargo smoke light and the fire bell. We declared an emergency, requested the emergency equipment to standby and proceeded to the nearest suitable field of pit. We accomplished the 'cargo fire/smoke' checklist. We landed successfully and taxied off the runway and performed the 'evacuate/evacuation' checklist and departed the aircraft using the escape slide. During the event we did not don our oxygen masks because we did not see or smell smoke. If the event were to happen again, we all agreed that we would don oxygen masks because of possible smoke/fumes and the raise of cabin to eliminate the smoke. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: callback conversation revealed that the aircraft was a B727 and that the cause of the smoke/fire warning had not been released yet. Reporter captain sent an air safety report to his company but had not received feedback on the mechanic report.
