Narrative:

During descent for arrival into dfw we were given a crossing restr of sousa intersection at 7000 ft. ZFW then handed us off to approach (dfw) which then stopped us at 11000 ft, due to conflicting traffic. Once clear of traffic we were again given sousa intersection at 7000 ft. The first officer, the PF, then resumed descent. At this point descent and approach checklist were called for and run. About halfway through approach check captain noticed that we were at 8500 ft over sousa. First officer then stated he had misread STAR. Contributing to this could be first officer's relative inexperience (50 hours), unfamiliarity with area, and reduced rest the night before. The arrival at any busy area always include a high workload with several distractions, and this again underscores the importance of due vigilance from both crew members.

Title: FLC OF A SAAB 340, SF34L, UNDERSHOT DSCNT ALT RESULTING IN NOT MEETING AN ASSIGNED XING FIX ALT RESTR.

Narrative: DURING DSCNT FOR ARR INTO DFW WE WERE GIVEN A XING RESTR OF SOUSA INTXN AT 7000 FT. ZFW THEN HANDED US OFF TO APCH (DFW) WHICH THEN STOPPED US AT 11000 FT, DUE TO CONFLICTING TFC. ONCE CLR OF TFC WE WERE AGAIN GIVEN SOUSA INTXN AT 7000 FT. THE FO, THE PF, THEN RESUMED DSCNT. AT THIS POINT DSCNT AND APCH CHKLIST WERE CALLED FOR AND RUN. ABOUT HALFWAY THROUGH APCH CHK CAPT NOTICED THAT WE WERE AT 8500 FT OVER SOUSA. FO THEN STATED HE HAD MISREAD STAR. CONTRIBUTING TO THIS COULD BE FO'S RELATIVE INEXPERIENCE (50 HRS), UNFAMILIARITY WITH AREA, AND REDUCED REST THE NIGHT BEFORE. THE ARR AT ANY BUSY AREA ALWAYS INCLUDE A HIGH WORKLOAD WITH SEVERAL DISTRACTIONS, AND THIS AGAIN UNDERSCORES THE IMPORTANCE OF DUE VIGILANCE FROM BOTH CREW MEMBERS.
