Narrative:

On may/xx/97 at approximately XX15 we were flying within the sdf class C airspace with radar service, landing at sdf. ATC approach control pointed out 'traffic at 10 O'clock, 5 mi' for you to follow for the visual runway 17. Upon looking at the 10 O'clock position, I saw traffic inbound to the intended runway and called the traffic in sight and was told to 'follow the traffic, caution wake turbulence a heavy DC8.' when the traffic was 90 degrees to my position I started a left base for runway 17 keeping that traffic in sight. Upon starting the turn to final, my copilot saw traffic from 1 O'clock high letting down out of the clouds, a DC8. I continued a 45 degree bank left turn and departed the runway 17 localizer course on a 090 degree heading at which time ATC alerted us of the situation. The aircraft that I initially followed was in front of the DC8 and was mistaken for my traffic. We were then resequenced for landing without further incident.

ATC APCH CTL POINTED OUT 'TFC AT 10 O'CLOCK, 5 MI' FOR YOU TO FOLLOW FOR THE VISUAL RWY 17. UPON LOOKING AT THE 10 O'CLOCK POS, I SAW TFC INBOUND TO THE INTENDED RWY AND CALLED THE TFC IN SIGHT AND WAS TOLD TO 'FOLLOW THE TFC, CAUTION WAKE TURB A HVY DC8.' WHEN THE TFC WAS 90 DEGS TO MY POS I STARTED A L BASE FOR RWY 17 KEEPING THAT TFC IN SIGHT. UPON STARTING THE TURN TO FINAL, MY COPLT SAW TFC FROM 1 O'CLOCK HIGH LETTING DOWN OUT OF THE CLOUDS, A DC8. I CONTINUED A 45 DEG BANK L TURN AND DEPARTED THE RWY 17 LOC COURSE ON A 090 DEG HDG AT WHICH TIME ATC ALERTED US OF THE SIT. THE ACFT THAT I INITIALLY FOLLOWED WAS IN FRONT OF THE DC8 AND WAS MISTAKEN FOR MY TFC. WE WERE THEN RESEQUENCED FOR LNDG WITHOUT FURTHER INCIDENT.
