Narrative:

Night approach in mountainous terrain. DME arc to ILS approach runway 17 failed to receive landing clearance from madinah tower. Long duty day (12 hours 55 mins), busy approach with arc, lead- in radial, altitude changes to final approach altitude and crew fatigue. I asked first officer if we were cleared to land at 1500 ft AGL and he said 'yes.' I took him at his word. I should've double checked but failed to do so. After landing we were told to contact tower! No other traffic at airport and no traffic on ground. First officer's first trip on hadj. So did not back up communications.

I TOOK HIM AT HIS WORD. I SHOULD'VE DOUBLE CHKED BUT FAILED TO DO SO. AFTER LNDG WE WERE TOLD TO CONTACT TWR! NO OTHER TFC AT ARPT AND NO TFC ON GND. FO'S FIRST TRIP ON HADJ. SO DID NOT BACK UP COMS.
