Narrative:

We were on J6 near colns intersection, prior to hvq. MCP was in heading mode when it should have been in LNAV. As aircraft departed airway at a turning point, ATC advised us that we were off the filed airway. We then returned to course. Captain had left system in heading after trimming the aircraft at cruise altitude.

Title: CAPT OF A B757 FAILED TO FOLLOW ASSIGNED TRACK WHEN HE FORGOT TO RESET THE ACFT FLT DIRECTOR COMPUTER BACK TO LNAV AFTER LEVELING OFF IN CRUISE AND THE ACFT WANDERED OFF THE ASSIGNED AIRWAY. ATC INTERVENED AND THE CAPT BROUGHT THE ACFT BACK TO INTENDED COURSE.
