Narrative:

As PNF in a right turn (took off runway 13 at acy) direct eno I was looking up our next VOR (dqo) and talking on the radio when I noticed we were at 280 KIAS. Told first officer to slow it down which he promptly did. ZDC subsequently asked our aircraft type. First officer's first flight with me. He was an unknown to me so should have been watching much closer. He's relatively new. Unfamiliarity with airspace (west coast carrier) so had nose in map. Nighttime. Maybe a little fatigued. I'm a new MD80 captain so maybe not as comfortable in aircraft yet taking away from simply flying/monitoring the aircraft.
