Narrative:

I was on crosswind leg for standard 'dumbarton left' departure. Other aircraft was transitioning pao class 'D' toward sql. There was no warning from pao tower to either aircraft of the existence of the other. I also found out on returning to pao that I had a non-functioning transponder. I made evasive action at time of incident.
