Narrative:

I radioed republic tower on 118.8, no response from tower. I begin climbing, call again, no response. I change frequency to 125.2, radio, no response. I change back to 118.8, radio, they respond. I am 3 mi south of airport at about 1600 ft. Tower tells me I should have radioed at 6 mi. I explain situation and am cleared for final approach. Note: 125.2 is alternate frequency sometimes used by frg tower. Recommendations: stay with tower frequency and wait for response. Stay clear of airspace until radio contact is established. If unable to establish radio contact, follow NORDO procedures.
